VIRGIN LABFEST 3

Start:     Jun 28, '07
End:     Jul 8, '07
Location:     Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City
THIRD SERVING OF THE VIRGIN LABFEST

VIRGIN LABFEST 3, the year’s most anticipated festival of new and untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged plays, runs from June 28 until July 8 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This year, the festival features the premiere of eighteen (18) new one-act plays plus staged readings of full-length plays, directed and acted by artists from some of the country’s most respected performing companies.

The first set, INTERNATIONAL NIGHT, is a compilation of plays by foreign playwrights, an innovation for this year’s festival. He-Me-She-It by Narumol Thammapruksa and directed by Jaime del Mundo is a poetic improvisation where a newcomer, an alien/stranger both influences and terrifies the members of an undisclosed remote town. Lizard by Haresh Sharma, directed by Nicolas Pichay, is a surreal and inertly violent depiction of a Singaporean household whose scheming, double-dealing, and at times cruel transactions negotiated with each other makes for a rather intense sala-set drama. Yoji Sakate’s Noh Play, Three Sisters, directed by Jose Estrella is a moving ghost story and a touching memorial to the ravages of war and the significant resonance of War in Theater. Tanghalang Huseng Batute, June 28 (3:00 PM / 8:00 PM), July 7 (8:00 PM) and July 8 (3:00 PM)

MADADRAMANG PAMILYA is household drama but definitely not telenovela fare. Skeletons in the closet, in-house rebellions, and family decisions that just have to be made—do not do this at home. Debbie Ann Tan’s Teroristang Labandera, directed by Yoshi Toshihisa, is a funny and yet disturbing destruction of class and racial stereotypes, this comedy may seem to say more than just being wacky. Bagahe by J. Dennis Teodosio and directed by Rito Asilo is a short, intense conversation between a son and his dying father torn by the need to migrate and the need to define home. Looking for Darna by Lani Montreal and directed by Khryss Adalia is about three generations of women painfully coming to terms with a reality that renders many women helpless and silent. Tanghalang Huseng Batute, June 29 (3:00 PM / 8:00 PM), July 5 (3:00 PM) andJuly 8 (8:00 PM)

The third set, XX AND X: BABALA: HINDI PANG-ISIP BATA, is the most unsettling and disturbing compilation of the season. We enjoin you to widen your understanding, come in with an open mind and expect the unexpected. Séance by Auggie Arcenas and directed by EricK Castro is a quiet yet intense confrontation between a fortune teller and her customer that becomes a battle of wit and a revelation of small cruelties and hypocrisies. Allan Lopez’ Kasaysayan, directed by Victor Villareal, is a rather macabre rendition of capitalist barbarism and a gruesome exploration of the weird, horrible ways of the bourgeoisie set in the fictional future. My Padir is an OCW by George Vail Kabristante, directed by Issa Lopez, is about an aging transvestite’ s bizarre association with a young dancer who harbors a family secret. Tanghalang Huseng Batute, June 30 (3:00 PM / 8:00 PM), July 5 (8:00 PM) and July 6 (3:00 PM)

ANG PAGDADALAGA AT IBA PANG REBELASYON still provides another take on forbidden loves, sexual desire and the fruits it reaps, both good and evil. It is also 3 variations on a theme: Spring’s awakening! Kuyom by Argel Tuason and directed by John Abul is about a young boy’s exposure to exploitation and cruelty, rendered more complicated by the environment he finds himself in, a world of gay impersonators. Three Unsent Letters, written by Arlo De Guzman and directed by Rody Vera, is an epistolary drama about a man’s awakening to love and betrayal. Letters that have not been sent become monologues of despair and a sense of renewal at the same time. Ellas Inosentes by Layeta Bucoy and directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio is about two sisters whose innocent conversation and unmalicious observations of a household not quite their own reveals the violence and inhumanity of the adults around them. Tanghalang Huseng Batute, July 1 (3:00 PM / 8:00 PM), July 6 (8:00 PM) and July 7 (3:00 PM)

CHILDREN’S PLAYS are at the Bulwagang Amado Hernandez on June 29 (3:00 PM), June 30 (10:00 AM / 3:00 PM) and July 1 (3:00 PM). Rene Villanueva’s Bertdey ni Guido, performed by the Dulaang Sipat Lawin Ensemble and directed by George de Jesus III, offers a wonderful juvenile perspective of the relationship between the personal and the political, made more marvelous with music and dance. Mga Obra ni Maestra, written and directed by Niel De Mesa and performed by the Koine Theater Foundation, is a hilarious and biting play about three young children with superpowers and are heavily conflicted between saving the world or fulfilling the grueling, tedious domestic duties that their parents have ordered them to do. James Cansanay’s Kung Pwede Sanang Ipagpalit ang Tatay, directed by Catherine Racsag is a strange but fascinating fable about a young boy who mistakenly traded his father for a toy.

IDENTITY AND POLITICS is at the Bulwagang Amado Hernandez on July 6 (8:00 PM), July 7 (3:00 PM / 8:00 PM) and July 8 (3:00 PM). May Bumubulong by Job Pagsibigan and directed by Christian Bautista is about two brothers battling for the right to claim property and lineage and revealing the fragile and uncertain state of any one’s identity. Pobreng Alindahaw by J. Dennis Teodosio and directed by Delfin Ilao is a short but hilarious allegory that starts off like a folktale for children, but the issues laid down by two dragonflies and a butterfly turn this otherwise comic fantasy into a serious look into one’s personality. Rogelio Braga’s Sa Pagdating ng Barbaro, directed by Nick Olanka and performed by the UP Repertory Company, is about a small town that witnesses a suicide, an open secret military operation in a Muslim community nearby, the coming of a stranger with a suitcase that contains a secret, which no one will ever know, and the numerous white lies of a woman.

THE BEST OF VIRGIN LABFEST 2 brings back the award-winning Palanca On My Mind by Job Pagsibigan, directed by Roobak Valle, and audience favorite Hubad by Liza Magtoto directed by Denisa Reyes, Tanghalang Huseng Batute, July 3 (8:00 PM) and July 4 (3:00 / 8:00 PM).

PUBLIC READINGS of full-length plays will be at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino at 7:00 PM: Glen Mas’ Games People Play (June 29), Rene Villanueva’s Baby B. (June 30), Tim Dacanay’s Teatro Porvenir (July 6) Huling Salubong by Malou Jacob (July 7).

Some of the actors appearing in Virgin Labfest 3 include Irma Adlawan, Sigrid Bernardo, Nonie Buencamino, Roeder Camanag, Buddy Caramat, Hermie Concepcion, Mailes Kanapi, Dolly de Leon, Jojit Lorenzo, Allan Manalo, Missy Maramara, Ronnie Martinez, Paolo O'Hara, Peewee O'Hara, Ama Quiambao, Cheryl Ramos, Ricky Rivero, Ruby Ruiz, Gilleth Sandico, and the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company.

There will also be PLATFORM EVENTS at the Bulwagang Carlos Francisco at 5:45 PM from June 28 to July 1 and July 5-8) featuring the playwrights and directors as they discuss their works and interact with the public. BREAKOUT performances in cabaret-style will also be performed nightly at the CCP Silangan Hall.

The Virgin Labfest is a joint venture of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (SentrongPangkultur a ng Pilipinas), Tanghalang Pilipino, Writers Bloc, Inc., and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) with the generous support of the Japan Foundation Manila.

Since 2005, the festival has witnessed the works of stage directors Tuxqs Rutaquio, Denisa Reyes, Herbert Go, Phil Noble, Victor Villareal and Roobak Valle, among others. Professional actors like Neil Ryan Sese, Irma Adlawan-Marasigan, Nonie Buencamino, Mailes Kanapi, Tess Jamias and Marj Lorico have supported the festival with their theatrical talent and dedication. Even new actors have been discovered with the performances of the Dulaang Sipat Lawin Ensemble, the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors’ Company, actors from PETA, Gantimpala Foundation, as well as freelance professionals and even student theater artists.

Dynamic, creative, experimental, at times edgy, always provocative, the Virgin Labfest has served as the venue for coming together to explore new visions, expressions and discourses, and an exciting celebration of Philippine Theater.

EIGA SAI 2007

Start:     Jun 20, '07
End:     Jul 8, '07
Location:     Shangri-la Plaza / UP Film Institute / Cultural Center of the Philippines
CONTEMPORARY FILMS
THE JAPAN FOUNDATION, MANILA'S
MONTH-LONG EIGA SAI
The Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the UP Film Institute, proudly presents slices of Japanese life as seen through the eyes of contemporary Japanese directors of "Eiga Sai 2007": a showcase of modern film genre at the Shang Cineplex, UP Film Institute and CCP Dream Theater.

Among the films to be featured are Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari, 2004, directed by Tetsuya Nakashima), Harmful Insect (Gaichu, 2002, directed by Akihiko Shiota), Hotel Hibiscus (Hotel Hibiscus, 2002, directed by Yuji Nakae), No One's Ark (Baka no Hakobune, 2002, directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita), Inochi (Inochi, 2002, directed by Tetsuo Shinohara), Out of this World (Kono Yo no Sotoe-Club Shinchu Gun, 2003, directed by Junji Sakamoto), The Stars Converge (Chirusoku no Natsu, 2003, directed by Kiyoshi Sasabe), Blue (Blue, 2001, directed by Hiroshi Ando), Blue Spring (Aoi Haru, 2001, directed by Toshiaki Toyoda) and Shangri-la (Togenkyo No Hitobito, 2002, directed by Takashi Miike).

The Eiga Sai (literally, 'film festival' in Japanese) opens at the Shangri-la Plaza Mall on June 20 with light comedy, "Kamikaze Girls" (2004, 103 minutes, Color), written by Novala Takemoto and directed by Nakashima Tetsuya. It tells the story of two very different teenagers who become best friends, even though neither will admit it. J-Pop star Kyoko Fukada stars as Momoko, a 17-year-old girl so obsessed with everything rococo that she wears old-fashioned frilly white clothing and carries a parasol. After Momoko's mother leaves her small time crook husband, her young daughter grows up on the farm, 60 miles from Tokyo, with her ex Yakuza father who sells fake Versace merchandize and grandmother, a woman with an extraordinary ability to catch flies in mid air. Desperate for money, Momoko starts selling the remainder of her father's counterfeit clothing, but her only customer is a tough-talking young biker chick, Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya), who belongs to an all-girl gang. Their lives exemplify some of the fascinating intricacies of Japanese youth culture in a feel good film with art direction creatively designed to blow your socks off. The movie garnered critical acclaim and won numerous awards in Japan and abroad.

All films will be shown with English subtitles. Screening venues are at the Cinema 3, Shangri-La Plaza Mall (June 20-26), UP Film Institute (July 2-5), and CCP Dream Theater (July 4-8). Admission is free. For detailed screening schedules and inquiries, please check the Japan Foundation, Manila website: www.jfmo.org.ph or call the JFM telephone numbers 811-6155 to 58.

Synopsis
Momoko (Kyoko Fukada) escapes from the boredom of life in her humdrum rural hometown Shimotsuma by swathing herself from head to toe in doll-like "Lolita" garb. One day she meets her diametrical opposite on the fashion scale, the surly black lipstick biker chick Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya, winner of a 2005 Japan Academy Prize for best newcomer), who takes a liking to Momoko's unexpectedly gutsy nature and the two form an unlikely alliance. Momoko consoles Ichigo after she suffers a broken heart at the hands of a local pompadoured lothario, and uses her embroidery skills to embellish Ichigo's biker uniform for the graduation ceremony of a respected senior. In return, she takes Momoko to the best Lolita boutique in the city where her sewing skills gain her a chance to work for her favorite designer. However, Ichigo's fellow delinquents don't take kindly to her friendship with Momoko, which leads to a final showdown with the gang boss. Severely outnumbered, Ichigo looks doomed until the loyal Momoko rides to her rescue. A mildly surreal, frenetically comic journey into Japan's youth subcultures based on a graphic novel by cult manga creator Novala Takemoto and directed by TV commercial maestro Tetsuya Nakashima.

Synopsis
"Hotel Hibiscus" is the story of one very young energetic girl named Mieko and her extraordinarily international family who live in Okinawa. They live in a run down old hotel called Hotel Hibiscus with only one room for rent. It is an extraordinarily serene film that shares similarities in style to some of Takeshi Kitano's stone cold calm film moments as well as owing a bit to Hayao Miyazaki in its celebration of childlike irreverence. The film focuses on a dilapidated hotel which is run by an interesting melting pot of a family that never ceases to remind themselves of their international roots. The story begins when Mieko and her two friends saves a teenage boy named Notojima (Wada Toshihiro) and he becomes the hotel's sole guest. Along with her classmates, Mieko spends her days trying to find Kijimuna the Forest Fairy. One day, her mother and half sister depart for the States to meet her sister's real father, leaving Mieko very busy with all the cooking and cleaning chores at the hotel. She delivers a letter to her father, who's working at a pineapple orchard, and meets a strange old man who calls himself Old Man Kijimuna. She also runs into a girl that's a dead ringer for herself. Mieko's summer holiday is filled with all sorts of experiences.

The young Daisuke Sakai (Hiroshi Yamamoto) and his girlfriend Hisako Shimada (Tomoko Kotera) are in debt five million yen. They leave Tokyo in a small motorboat and go off to Daisuke's hometown, a small island in an attempt to persuade the locals to buy a health drink named "Akajiru" which, due to its awful taste, they haven't been able to sell in Tokyo. However, not even his family and childhood friends are willing to support their enterprise. Besides, Daisuke's ex-girlfriend and her younger sister complicate matters in his relationship. Set in the early 90's, this picture shows how it's hard for the young generation to find a place in the economy of its country.

Synopsis
Featuring a multinational cast directed by Junji Sakamoto (KT, Bokunchi), Out Of This World is an ensemble drama set in the aftermath of World War II. Kentaro (Masato Hagiwara) returns to U.S.- occupied Japan after being stationed in the Philippines, and is shocked to see what has become of his country. The sound of jazz drifts through the streets, as do thousands of American GIs, and the drink of choice is now Coca Cola. Sensing an opportunity, Kentaro hooks up with Shozo (Jo Odagiri) and some other likeminded musicians to form a jazz band called "The Lucky Strikers."

They land a gig at a servicemen's club on an American air force base but their audience doesn't have much patience for their substandard performances, especially the antagonistic jazz aficionado Russell (Shea Whigham). Kentaro's insensitivity towards the friendly club manager Jim (Peter Mullan) gets them barred from the base. Drug addiction, poverty and ideology draw them away from their music, and eventually the band members go their separate ways. Upon the death of one of their number, The Lucky Strikers reform and are given another chance to play at the American base. They perform one of Russell's songs, "Out Of This World," in tribute to their friend.

Sachiko, a 12-year-old girl in junior high school, has a complicated life. When she was still an infant, her father disappeared. Her mother, who works in a bar, is secretive and distant. Longing for an escape from her dreary existence and lacking any kind of parental guidance, Sachiko has a shortlived affair with her sixth-grade teacher, Ogata. But fearing that his indiscretion might be discovered, Ogata moves to a town far away. Although he and Sachiko continue a written correspondence, soon the absence of her only real friend and confidant leads Sachiko into a deep melancholy. When her mother attempts to commit suicide, the turbulence of Sachiko's life becomes too much to bear. After dropping out of school, she finds temporary solace in the company of others who have fallen through the cracks of middleclass society. But when she is forced back into the confines of her classroom, her long-dormant rage begins to surface and her life quickly spins out of control.

Synopsis
This film is the third feature film by Toshiaki Toyoda following his gritty boxing documentary Unchained. It is his first film adaptation of a book made by popular manga-artist Taiyo Matsumoto. The film opens with the quiet yet brutal Kujo (played by Gohatto's Ryuhei Matsuda) winning a particularly hair-raising version of chicken — clapping as many times as you can while hanging on the outside of the school's rooftop railing. The winner of the game traditionally gets to rule the school, and Kujo sets a new record of eight claps. To him, however, both this game and the ruling of the school is meaningless and bothersome. Annoyed by Kujo's wavering attitude, Aoki suddenly changes his hairstyle and behavior. One morning, Aoki is standing on the roof of the school building. He starts doing the balcony game on his own. Driven by an ominous presentiment, Kujo runs up to the roof. The instant he opens the door to the roof, Aoki's body lets go of the railing. When his count reaches thirteen, Aoki hits the ground. The film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival.

Synopsis
This film is a story of a typical small business printing company heading straight into bankruptcy after another burst over the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Umemoto Printers, already creaky thanks to antique equipment, is only the smallest domino to fall as owner Seisuke Umemoto fails to collect on debts from the larger companies he supplies; in turn, he can't pay his loyal employees. This mousy man-of-honor goes on a near-suicidal bender, eventually ending up in a ramshackle shantytown on the edge of Tokyo. Far from being a creepy slum, the ad-hoc village is well run by a quiet powerhouse and possible former yakuza everyone calls the Mayor. With the help of super-organized squatters, like an unemployed postal worker, a blocked novelist, and a would be private snoop, Umemoto is able to navigate tricky bureaucratic waters in order to get the goods on Nagashima, a corporate CEO who has declared high-profile bankruptcy while secretly funneling his assets through various mistresses and side-companies. After several smaller schemes, the Mayor and company finally get back to Umemoto's beloved Heidelberg presses where they literally give him a license to print money — or something as good as money.

SLOW-DOWN CULTURE - an interesting reflection

An interesting reflection: Slow-Down Culture

It has been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working
for
them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes
two
years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a
rule.

Globalization processes have caused in us (all over the world) a
general
sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to
possess a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with
the
slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate,
debate, hold xxx quantity of meetings and work with a slow-down scheme.
At
the end, this always yields better results.

Said in another words:

1. Sweden is about the size of San Pablo, a state in Brazil.

2. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants.

3. Stockholm, has 500,000 people.

4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, Nokia are some of its renowned
companies.  Volvo supplies the NASA.

The first time I was in Sweden, one of my colleagues picked me up at
the
hotel every morning. It was September, very cold and snowy. We would
arrive
early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance
(2,000
employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say
anything,
either the second or third. One morning, I asked, "Do you have a fixed
parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when
there
are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here
early
we have time to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and needs a
parking space closer to the door. Don't you think?" Imagine my
reaction.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe called Slow Food. This movement
establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time
to
taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing.

Slow Food is against its counterpart: the spirit of Fast Food and what
it
stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement
called Slow Europe, as mentioned in Business Week. Basically, the
movement
questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by
globalization,
fueled by the desire to "have in quantity" (life status) versus "having
with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". The French,
even
though they work 35 hours a week, are more productive than the
Americans or
the British. The Germans have established 28.8-hour work weeks and have
seen their productivity driven up by 20%.

This slow attitude has brought forth the US's attention, pupils of the
fast
and the "do it now!". This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing
less or
having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with
greater
quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less
stress.

It means re-establishing family values, friends, free and leisure time.
It
means taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global",
undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the
simplicity of living. It stands for a less coercive work environment,
happier, lighter and more productive, where humans enjoy doing what
they
know best how to do.

It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious
quality with no rush that will increase productivity and the quality of
products and services, without losing the essence of spirit.

In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a
girl
to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any
minute
now". To which Al Pacino responds, "A life is lived in an instant".
Then
they dance to a tango.

Many of us live our lives running after time, but we only reach it when
we
die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time.
Others
are so anxious of living the future that they forget to live the
present,
which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time
throughout
the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one
of
us does with our time. We need to live each moment. As John Lennon
said,
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

Congratulations for reading this till the end. There are many who will
have
stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this globalized world.
